How to spot a lynx: Tips from local wildlife sancutuary

When it comes to winter animals, the lynx is one of many that is born for the snow.

With their thick fur coats and large rounded snowshoe-like feet, it is hard to miss these elusive predators in the cold months.

While most would consider them to be very rare, Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Muskoka Ont., is preparing residents for the potential appearance of these stunning animals.

Members of the sanctuary say lynx can be found north of Algonquin Park in the Boreal Forest. “Algonquin Provincial Park lies in a transition zone between deciduous forests typical of areas to the south of the Park, and coniferous forests, more typical of areas to the north,” as stated on the Algonquin Provincial Park website.

There are a few telltale sightings that people can keep an eye out for. In order to catch a glimpse, you must beware of the cat’s long black ear tufts, which are much longer than a bobcats.

Another giveaway is their short, black-tipped tail, shared members of the sanctuary.

According to the Government of Ontario, if you encounter a lynx, never approach the animal, especially if it’s near a kill or with a young. Do not offer it food or begin to run as a cat’s instinct is to chase.

The lynx pictured above is one of two lynx that have found a forever home at Aspen Valley. Aspen is situated on 460 acres of woodlands providing a home to the creatures.

According to Aspen’s website, their primary goal is to rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife. Back in 2023, Aspen shared the story of two Canadian lynx who were brought to their sanctuary.

These fierce cats had been purchased as kittens for hands on education and taken to schools and parties.

When they had outgrown their use, they were sent to live in a non-releasable compound which came under increased scrutiny, and was shut down by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the sanctuary shared.

Now, you will find them roaming their expansive wooded enclosure, playfully pouncing on one another next to their pond.
